Catherine Brown has been an actively involved leader with Make-A-Wish® Suffolk County. Her involvement began in 1984 when she wrote an article on the Foundation for a local newspaper and asked if the Chapter needed volunteers. Catherine has served the children of the Foundation in many capacities. In the Chapter’s early days, Catherine was an office volunteer, a member of the Public Relations Committee, and assisted in the designing of the Chapter’s newsletter. She trained to be a wish granter and has managed the coordination of many wishes over the last 30 years.
Throughout her years as a wish granter, she has seen many changes, given her input, and continuously supported the organization. Catherine has helped to shape and set policies for the Foundation. She has assisted the organization with medical outreach by visiting hospitals and providing information about Make-A-Wish. Catherine has also served on the Board of Directors for the Foundation as Board Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. After fulfilling her term, she remains on the Foundation’s Advisory Board and continues to deliver our mission to the many courageous children we serve.
Gerry Murphy became a wish granter for the organization in 1984. Since then, she has completed over 100 wishes for Make-A-Wish Suffolk County. She is a cheerful and upbeat presence who is always willing and ready to take on a new wish. She is known to make families feel comfortable on her visits due to her compassionate disposition.
Even when Gerry made the decision to stop driving, she did not let that stop her from being a wish granter. She asked the Chapter to find her a wish granting partner that wouldn't mind driving her to and from wish visits. At almost 90 years old, she continues to grant wishes to this day. Her commitment to the children we serve is incomparable. Gerry has also been a part of our Angel campaign during the holiday seasons; selling ornaments with wish art as a fundraiser for the Foundation.
Catherine and Gerry are an inspiration to everyone at Make-A-Wish and a true testament to the Foundation’s successes.
