Sebastian's Whale of a Wish

“ In the hospital, we looked up different excursions. ”

- Anna Maria, wish mom

Sebastian wished to go on a whale watch and was surprised to learn that his wish was coming true at the Bouquet of Wishes gala.

This spring, wish child Sebastian and his family attended the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Suffolk County’s annual gala, “Bouquet of Wishes.”Weeks prior to his wish trip, wish child Sebastian and his family attended the annual gala, "Bouquet of Wishes." In front of an audience of over 700, Sebastian learned that his wish would be coming true.

At three years old, Sebastian was diagnosed with Wilms' Tumor, an aggressive form of cancer in the kidneys. As a result, Sebastian had one kidney removed. Now at five years old, he is in remission.

"Thank God he’s been doing well," says his father Matthew. Sebastian’s love of whales carried him through long hospital stays.

"Every night we were in the hospital that’s what we’d do; we’d go on the internet and look up different excursions," said his mother Anna Maria. Shortly after learning Make-A-Wish would be granting a wish for him, Sebastian sat with his family and stated, "I want to see a pod of whales."

Sebastian wished to go on a whale watch. At the gala, Karine Hollander, President & CEO of the chapter, called Sebastian and his family up to the podium and asked him what his wish was. He shyly replied into the microphone, "Puget Sound," where he wished to go whale-watching in Washington. Sebastian’s favorite whale is the Orca Whale.

Karine announced that his whale-watching wish would be granted in August and presented him with some special gifts, including personalized rain slickers for him and his brother Brandon! Sebastian and the audience then viewed a video message from Captain Shane Aggergaard, owner of Island Adventures in Washington, welcoming Sebastian to Puget Sound and describing his excursion.

"We’re really looking forward to having you on the boat and showing you a good time," Captain Aggergaard said. Sebastian was beaming and the smile continued throughout his wish trip!

Thank God he's been doing well. ”

— Matthew, wish dad.

  • On Saturday, January 20th, the Long Island Royals 14U Hockey Team hosted their 3rd annual Make-A-Wish Fundraiser! This year, the team rallied the community to help grant the #wish of 6 year-old James from #Holbrook. James, who happens to love hockey, was excited to meet the players who are making his wish to visit the Disney Aulani Resort in #Hawaii come true. The team of boys welcomed James as part of their team. When James arrived, he had his own stall in the locker room with his very own LI Royals jersey, he watched warm-ups from the bench, and did the honor of dropping the puck at center ice. We are so proud to partner with these players who truly understand the meaning of #teamwork both on and off the ice. Our sincerest thanks to the Long Island Royals 14U hockey team, Superior Ice Rink, the wonderful Sue Kav who organized the event, our friends from Chick-fil-A Commack who donated their services this past Saturday, and everyone who showed their support to James and his family.
